Concession Map

Exploration for hydrocarbons in Jordan has gained strong momentum since 1982. These efforts have led to the discovery of Oil in Hamzeh field of Azraq Area (1984) and commercial gas in Risha Area (1987). The exploration activities have concentrated on specific areas leaving most of the country either rarely or completely unexplored.

Jordan is subdivided into (8) exploration blocks and the current status of these blocks is shown on the concession map.

The Cenozoic-Mesozoic plays in Jordan include Azraq Area where oil was found in upper Cretaceous Carbonates and sourced from Cenomanian - Touronian limestones and marls. The North Highlands play include Triassic - Jurassic Carbonates and clastics which can be potential reservoir and source at different levels. Oil occurrence was recorded from the Jurassic Sequence of well NH-2.

The Paleozoic Play include the upper Ordovician Sandstones which contain commercial gas in Risha Area and oil occurrence in well WS-4 of Sirhan Area. The lower Silurian Shales are the major source for these hydrocarbon accumulations. Cambrian Sandstones in well AH-2 in the Dead Sea Area have also oil occurrences.
